Bone Graft
Dental Bone Graft:
Building the Foundation for Your Implants
Advanced Oral Surgery to Restore Jawbone Integrity and Ensure Implant Success

Understanding Dental Bone Grafting
What Is a Dental Bone Graft? A dental bone graft is a surgical procedure performed to rebuild or augment bone in the jaw where it is lacking. This "scaffolding" (graft material) allows your body to grow new, natural bone, a process called osseointegration.
Who Can Benefit?
This procedure is essential for patients who have experienced jawbone loss (atrophy) due to:
- ✅ Dental Implant Candidates: Needing a stable base for an implant.
- ✅ Tooth Extraction: To preserve the socket and prevent bone collapse.
- ✅ Periodontal (Gum) Disease: To restore bone lost to infection.
- ✅ Long-Term Tooth Loss: When the jawbone has shrunken over time.
Why It's Important
Without sufficient bone volume, dental implants cannot be placed, or if they are, they have a high risk of failure. Bone grafting is a necessary medical step to:
- ✅ Ensure long-term implant stability and success.
- ✅ Prevent facial structure changes (sunken cheeks).
- ✅ Stop the progression of bone resorption.
- ✅ Provide a foundation for aesthetic dental work.
Types of Bone Graft Materials

| Graft Type | Source | Key Characteristic |
|---|---|---|
| Autograft | Patient's own body (e.g., chin, hip) | Gold standard; contains live cells. Requires a second surgical site. |
| Allograft | Human donor (medically processed) | Most common; safe, sterile, and acts as a scaffold. No second site. |
| Xenograft | Animal source (e.g., bovine/cow) | Highly purified, integrates well, and provides excellent volume. |
| Alloplast (Synthetic) | Medical-grade synthetic materials | Completely synthetic (e.g., calcium phosphate), resorbs over time. |
Accelerated Healing with PRF: We often enhance our grafts with Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF). This involves drawing a small amount of your own blood, spinning it in a centrifuge, and using the resulting PRF membrane (rich in growth factors) to dramatically speed up healing and reduce complications.
The Procedure: A Step-by-Step Guide

Consultation & 3D Scan
45-60 Minutes
- Comprehensive oral examination.
- 3D CBCT Scan: This is crucial. We use a Cone Beam CT scan to precisely measure your bone height, width, and identify nerves.
- Discuss graft type and create a surgical plan.
- Review medical history and pre-op instructions.
Anesthesia & Site Prep
15-30 Minutes
- Administration of potent local anesthesia. The area will be completely numb; you will feel no pain.
- Sedation options are available for anxious patients.
- If using PRF, a blood draw is performed.
- The surgical site is thoroughly sterilized.
Graft Placement & Membrane
45-60 Minutes
- A small incision is made to expose the bone.
- The chosen graft material is precisely placed to build volume.
- A collagen membrane is often placed over the graft. This barrier protects the graft and guides new bone growth.
- If PRF is used, it is layered with the graft.
Suturing & Recovery
15 Minutes
- The gum tissue is repositioned and secured with dissolvable sutures.
- Gauze is placed over the site to manage bleeding.
- Post-operative instructions and medications (antibiotics, pain relief) are provided.
- Your follow-up appointment is scheduled (1-2 weeks).
Healing Time vs. Procedure Time: The procedure itself is typically 60-90 minutes. The crucial phase is healing: the graft must integrate with your jaw for 4 to 9 months before a dental implant can be safely placed.
Pre-Treatment Preparation Guidelines
1-2 Weeks Before
- STOP SMOKING. This is the most important step. Smoking dramatically increases the risk of graft failure and infection.
- Avoid blood thinners (Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Warfarin) after consulting your surgeon and physician.
24 Hours Before
- Begin your prescribed antibiotic regimen to prevent infection.
- Arrange for someone to drive you home, especially if you plan on sedation.
- Eat a healthy, light meal before your appointment.
Treatment Day
- Take your prescribed medications as directed.
- Brush and floss thoroughly, but avoid the surgical site.
- Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.
- Do not wear any makeup or jewelry.
Graft failure risk is extremely high in active smokers. You must stop all nicotine use for at least 2 weeks before and 4 weeks after. You must also inform your surgeon of any bisphosphonate medications (e.g., for osteoporosis) as this can affect bone healing.
Aftercare & Recovery Timeline

First 24-48 Hours (Acute Phase)
Expect swelling, minor bleeding, and oozing. Swelling peaks at 48-72 hours.
- ✓ Apply ice packs (20 min on, 20 min off).
- ✓ Bite gently on gauze to control bleeding.
- ✓ Take antibiotics and pain medication as prescribed.
- ✗ DO NOT spit, rinse, or use a straw.
Week 1 (Healing & Soft Diet)
Swelling will start to subside. A soft food diet is mandatory.
- ✓ Begin gentle salt water rinses (after 24h).
- ✓ Eat soft foods: soup, yogurt, mashed potatoes.
- ✗ DO NOT smoke or drink alcohol.
- ✗ DO NOT brush the surgical site (use prescribed rinse).
Long-Term (Weeks 2-4 & Beyond)
Sutures will dissolve. The bone integration process begins.
- ✓ Attend your 1-2 week follow-up for site check.
- ✓ Slowly reintroduce harder foods as comfortable.
- ✗ DO NOT place any pressure on the graft (e.g., from a denture).
Warning Signs: Contact Us Immediately
While some discomfort is normal, call us if you experience:
- ⚠️ Severe or increasing pain after Day 3
- ⚠️ Signs of infection (pus, fever, bad taste)
- ⚠️ Significant loss of graft granules (looks like sand)
- ⚠️ Persistent numbness in lip or chin
Safety, Side Effects, and Clinic Protocols
Common Side Effects
- Swelling (Edema): ~100%. Peaks at 48-72 hours.
- Bruising: ~60%. Resolves in 7-10 days.
- Minor Bleeding/Oozing: ~90%. First 24-48 hours.
- Graft Granules: ~30%. Feeling a few "gritty" particles is normal.
Rare Complications
- ⚠️ Infection: < 5% risk, minimized with antibiotics and proper hygiene.
- ⚠️ Graft Failure/Rejection: Rare, but significantly higher risk in smokers.
- ⚠️ Nerve Irritation: Temporary or (extremely rare) permanent numbness.
Amir Beladi Safety Protocols
- 3D CBCT Nerve Mapping: We precisely map all nerve pathways before surgery to minimize the risk of nerve irritation.
- Piezosurgery (Ultrasonic): For complex cases, we use ultrasonic tools that cut hard bone without damaging soft tissues (nerves, gums).
- Mandatory Antibiotic Prophylaxis: All patients receive pre- and post-operative antibiotics to prevent infection.
- Sterile Surgical Suites: Procedures are performed in a hospital-grade sterile environment, not a standard dental room.
Results & Realistic Expectations

Realistic Healing Timeline
- Month 1-3: Soft tissue heals. The graft material is protected and "scaffolding" is stable.
- Month 4-6: Osseointegration. Your body's bone-growing cells (osteoblasts) replace the graft material with your own natural, strong bone.
- Month 6-9: Maturity. The bone is now dense and mature, ready to receive and support a dental implant.
Maintenance Requirements
- Absolute: No smoking. This is non-negotiable for success.
- Hygiene: Meticulous oral hygiene to keep the site free of bacteria.
- Pressure: Avoid wearing a partial denture or flipper that rests on the graft site unless cleared by your surgeon.
Success Rates
In healthy, non-smoking patients, clinical data shows dental bone graft success rates are between 90% and 95%. Our use of 3D CBCT planning and adjunct therapies like PRF aims to maximize this success. The goal is not just a successful graft, but a stable foundation for a dental implant that lasts decades.
Personalized Treatment Investment
Because dental bone grafting is highly customized, a transparent investment plan can only be provided after a 3D CBCT scan and clinical assessment by our oral surgeon.
Your Investment Plan is Based On:
- • Volume of Bone Needed: A small socket preservation vs. a large sinus lift.
- • Graft Material: The type of graft (Allograft, Xenograft) used.
- • Adjunct Therapies: The use of a membrane and/or PRF for healing.
- • Procedure Complexity: The specific location and surgical approach.
We provide detailed, all-inclusive package pricing and financing options during your consultation.
