Consultation & 3D Scan

- Review medical history and pre-op instructions.
Anesthesia & Site Prep
15-30 Minutes
- Administration of potent local anesthesia. The area will be completely numb; you will feel no pain.
- Sedation options are available for anxious patients.
- If using PRF, a blood draw is performed.
- The surgical site is thoroughly sterilized.
Graft Placement & Membrane
45-60 Minutes
- A small incision is made to expose the bone.
- The chosen graft material is precisely placed to build volume.
- A collagen membrane is often placed over the graft. This barrier protects the graft and guides new bone growth.
- If PRF is used, it is layered with the graft.
Suturing & Recovery
15 Minutes
- The gum tissue is repositioned and secured with dissolvable sutures.
- Gauze is placed over the site to manage bleeding.
- Post-operative instructions and medications (antibiotics, pain relief) are provided.
- Your follow-up appointment is scheduled (1-2 weeks).
Healing Time vs. Procedure Time: The procedure itself is typically 60-90 minutes. The crucial phase is healing: the graft must integrate with your jaw for 4 to 9 months before a dental implant can be safely placed.
Pre-Treatment Preparation Guidelines
1-2 Weeks Before
- STOP SMOKING. This is the most important step. Smoking dramatically increases the risk of graft failure and infection.
- Avoid blood thinners (Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Warfarin) after consulting your surgeon and physician.
24 Hours Before
- Begin your prescribed antibiotic regimen to prevent infection.
- Arrange for someone to drive you home, especially if you plan on sedation.
- Eat a healthy, light meal before your appointment.
Treatment Day
- Take your prescribed medications as directed.
- Brush and floss thoroughly, but avoid the surgical site.
- Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.
- Do not wear any makeup or jewelry.
Graft failure risk is extremely high in active smokers. You must stop all nicotine use for at least 2 weeks before and 4 weeks after. You must also inform your surgeon of any bisphosphonate medications (e.g., for osteoporosis) as this can affect bone healing.
Aftercare & Recovery Timeline
First 24-48 Hours (Acute Phase)
Expect swelling, minor bleeding, and oozing. Swelling peaks at 48-72 hours.
- ✓ Apply ice packs (20 min on, 20 min off).
- ✓ Bite gently on gauze to control bleeding.
- ✓ Take antibiotics and pain medication as prescribed.
- ✗ DO NOT spit, rinse, or use a straw.
Week 1 (Healing & Soft Diet)
Swelling will start to subside. A soft food diet is mandatory.
- ✓ Begin gentle salt water rinses (after 24h).
- ✓ Eat soft foods: soup, yogurt, mashed potatoes.
- ✗ DO NOT smoke or drink alcohol.
- ✗ DO NOT brush the surgical site (use prescribed rinse).
Long-Term (Weeks 2-4 & Beyond)
Sutures will dissolve. The bone integration process begins.
